Comprehensive Pistol

This is an extremely robust and thorough training course that takes the student from A-Z, specifically with the semi-automatic pistol, and is designed for the complete beginner or for those who have very little formalized training with pistols.  It does not matter if you are brand new to shooting and you’ve never fired a single round, or if you’re a regular at the range, creating and reinforcing bad habits.

This course is packed with all the essentials you will need to thoroughly understand your pistol and become so comfortable with it, that with continued training it soon becomes an extension of your hand.  The semi-automatic pistol will be the platform utilized as it is much easier and more practical to instruct a new student on reinforcing proper grip, trigger press, and trigger reset on a semi-automatic pistol than compared to the nomenclature and handling technique required by the revolver. If you require training on a revolver, please see The Hideout, NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting, or Custom Classes for more information.

This course requires students to move while shooting and assume various shooting positions like standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone.

NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

I am a very proud life member of the NRA and believe deeply in the principles of this organization and the direction it’s heading in.  The NRA is made up of thousands of Americans just like YOU!  The fact is, the large majority of folks in our great nation believe in preserving the right to not only personally own firearms, but the right to defend themselves during exigent circumstances as well.

This classic course is thorough, yet very basic and is intended for the complete beginner.  It presents the fundamentals by teaching the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely.  This course is broken up into two phases.  The first phase of training will be completed on-line by the student prior to the second phase which includes the classroom portion and live fire training on the range. Phase one can be accessed by the student simply by going to: https://onlinetraining.nra.org/

Upon satisfactorily completing phase two, each student will receive an NRA certificate.

Continental Breakfast (Provided)

In this class the student will learn:

  • Pistol Knowledge and Three Rules For Safe Pistol Handling
  • Ammunition Knowledge and Five Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
  • Shooting Positions and Shooting Qualifications
  • Scoring Targets and Selecting and maintaining a Pistol
  • Continued Opportunity For Skills Development

Lunch (Provided by Student)

Range Training/Qualification

This class is more static in nature and lacks the required movements and positional shooting of the Comprehensive Pistol course.  As a contrast to the Comprehensive Pistol Course, the student of the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting will not be utilizing the five count draw, malfunction drills, shooting on the move, balancing speed vs. accuracy, and shooting on steel.

Class Duration: Minimum 8 Hours

Cost: $149.00

Class Size: Limited to 10 students and will be divided into 5 pairs.  (This is especially ideal for couples).

Equipment Needed In Classroom:  Students will need to bring a notebook and pen for note taking, as well as a driver’s license or state issued ID card in order to ensure the phase one student (on-line studying and test taking), is the same as the student in phase two (classroom and range portion).  Students will also need to bring a copy of the digital handbook that was provided on-line as well as the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting guide that will be mailed to each student. Each student will be responsible for providing a current production semi-automatic pistol or revolver in student’s desired caliber.  NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN CLASS.

Equipment Needed At Range:  Students will need a pistol or a revolver, at least one magazine (for semi-automatic pistols), ear protection, eye protection, minimum 100 rounds of premium quality, copper coated, full metal jacket ammunition of specific caliber, cleaning kit of specific caliber, bottle of lubrication such as Break Free CLP, and durable clothing and element protection specific to the given weather conditions is mandatory.  Students are also responsible for bringing a lunch (brown bag or cooler).  Students are encouraged to bring healthy snacks and hydrating beverages of choice (non-alcoholic).  Course times and location will vary due to weather restrictions and lighting conditions throughout the year.

Any equipment, including ammunition, can be provided for the student at an additional charge with sufficient notice well in advance.  Please call us and we would be happy to assist you with equipment selection and/or purchase.

The Hideout

Although I don’t advocate utilizing a defensive handgun in any caliber less than 9mm, there are circumstances that prevail requiring the use of small pistols and revolvers.  These firearms have been known as hideout guns, last ditch backups, micro pistols, belly guns, deep concealment guns, tackle box guns, etc.  The reality is that some choose these weapons as a secondary, backup handgun to a larger platform.  Some have a sentimental attachment to a family hand-me-down that they don’t want to give up while others choose to utilize a smaller handgun as purchasing a new one doesn’t fit into the family budget.  Realizing these issues has created a need for a small handgun class that moves at a slower pace than the Comprehensive Pistol class.  Due to the intrinsic nature of these handguns having smaller grip dimensions, magazine well dimensions, round capacity, and time limitations with overall pistol presentation, this class thoroughly covers the basics while considerably slowing things down.

Equipment Needed:  Each student will be required to provide a small semi-automatic pistol or revolver in a caliber such as 9mm, .38 Special, .380 Auto (AKA 9mm Corto, Kurz, 9×17, and .380 ACP), .32 ACP, .25 ACP, or .22 (Including .22 Magnum, .22 Long Rifle, .22 Long, and .22 Short), at least two loading devices such as magazines for pistols and speed strips or speed loaders  for a revolver (The speed strip/speed loader may not be available for all calibers).  (If there is no loading device available for your revolver, that’s alright, don’t worry about it). Students may choose to bring a holster for their pistol and pouch for a loading device (such as a magazine, speed loader, or speed strip pouch), but this is not mandatory.  The material of the holster and loading device pouch (leather, nylon, Kydex, etc.), is completely up to the individual.

Students will be required to bring at least 100 rounds of premium quality, copper coated, full metal jacket ammunition in specific caliber, a belt (if electing to bring a holster and pouch for loading device), ear protection, eye protection, cleaning kit of specific caliber, bottle of lubrication such as Break Free CLP, and durable clothing and element protection specific to the given weather conditions is mandatory.  Students are responsible for bringing a lunch (brown bag or cooler).  Students are also encouraged to bring healthy snacks and hydrating beverages of choice (non-alcoholic).  Course times and locations will vary due to weather restrictions and lighting conditions throughout the year.

Tactical Shotgun

I have always maintained that it doesn’t matter which continent you come from; everyone speaks the international language of the 12 gauge shotgun.  Just cycling the action is extremely intimidating to anyone who is standing on the other side of the door with bad intentions.  However, the 12 gauge shotgun is one of the most misunderstood weapon systems, thanks to Hollywood drama.  It has been my experience that the vast majority of people have very little understanding about the true capability of the shotgun and what its intended purpose should be.  This class, like basic pistol, is very comprehensive and is meant for the individual with unique defensive needs or someone who wants to increase their knowledge and skill level with a different weapon system.  Contrary to widespread, popular belief, the shotgun is not meant for the average household defensive weapon.  However, in the hands of a highly trained and competent individual, in the right circumstances, the capability of this unique platform is extremely potent and far-reaching.  I will instruct on most shotgun systems, but I prefer the pump action, Remington 870.  There is a definitive reason why it is the favorite choice among most municipal police departments and sheriff’s offices in America.

This course requires students to move while shooting and assume various shooting positions like standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone.

Complete Carbine

With the immense popularity of the AR-15, and other similar styles of carbine rifles, this type of platform has truly become a hobby in itself.  It’s mind boggling to see just how many accoutrements are available for these weapons and how many different configurations one can set up with the same rifle.  I can’t tell you how many people I speak with on a regular basis that end up building their very own carbine only to rat-hole it in the back of their safe, allowing it to emerge six months later as a talking point or “show and tell” item during a family BBQ.  Many others eventually get to the range to find that their rifle has some serious hiccups and the assembled parts just aren’t working correctly and the rifle is displaying some serious reliability issues.

Just as comprehensive as Basic Pistol and Tactical Shotgun, the Complete Carbine class is a power packed evolution of information, training, and tactics that is designed for anyone wanting to increase knowledge and confidence in this type of weapon system.  The beauty of the carbine rests in the wide variety of applications from varmint hunting to close quarter battle/tactical applications as well as longer range, counter sniper operations.

This course requires students to move while shooting and assume various shooting positions like standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone.

Concealed Carry

There is an ever-popular demand for concealed carry classes now that many states in our union have recognized the need and legalized the option to allow private citizens to arm and protect themselves.  I’m quite certain we can all agree that general criminal activity and more specifically, crimes against persons, have been on the rise in our country and throughout the world.  It is this fact that drives my passion for personal firearms training and is the very focal point of my business.

As a retired police officer with over twenty years in law enforcement, I have faithfully carried a pistol on my person, concealed, for half of my lifetime; with the exception of travelling to foreign countries and being on an operating table and under the influence of general anesthesia.  To me, concealing a pistol on my person is just as normal and comfortable as concealing my keys, wallet, and cell phone; it’s just another piece of my daily routine and personal equipment.  I have a wealth of information I’d like to share with you including many personal experiences along with legal, moral, ethical, tactical, and practical considerations that you will want to know before strapping a pistol to your hip or tucking it in your purse.  I believe that possessing sound mind and judgment, along with being in a constant state of readiness in order to utilize a pistol for the defense of yourself or another fellow human being is one of the greatest responsibilities that we have as Americans.  I will leave no stone unturned as I help you navigate your way through this course.

Many people wonder why it is important to obtain a concealed firearm permit (CFP) when Wyoming is a constitutional carry state to begin with.  Well, there are several advantages such as being able to skip the background check on firearm purchases, carrying a concealed firearm in national parks, and being able to legally carry a concealed firearm in 35 states besides Wyoming!

This class is extremely detailed and thorough, more so than any other concealed carry class you will find.  I have kept pricing very competitive while significantly increasing the amount of classroom time in order to give you the most amount of education.

Home Safe

As a long time policeman, I watched the anger, frustration, and utter bewilderment on the faces of countless people who were the victims of property crimes and/or crimes against persons.  Whether it was a burglary where the home or business was ransacked and the motivation was purely theft, or the burglary included additional, felony crimes and the occupants of the home/business were in grave physical danger, I have seen it all and the ending was often mixed with sadness and tragedy.  Each time I responded to a crime, I could always identify a weakness in the security of the physical location or the actions of the victim(s) and many times it was a combination of both.

I have always had a strong desire to share my training, experience, education, and tactics with good people in order to prevent residential and business crimes from taking place.  In the Home Safe course, I have a two phase approach in order to meet your needs.  I start phase one by meeting with you individually, and/or with the entire family to devise a security plan for your residential or business needs. I start by conducting a thorough interview and realizing what type of unique security needs you may have.  The next part of phase one starts on the exterior of your residence or business and concludes by working our way to the interior.  We look at exterior conditions and carefully plan strategic Security Through Environmental Design.  Depending upon your security needs, the sky is the limit!

Once we address the exterior of you castle, we work inside, going over a steadfast, realistic plan for any emergency that may arise like a natural disaster, fire, theft, or more serious crime like an armed intruder.  I can’t tell you how many people I speak with that purchase a firearm for home/business protection and then have no plan in place.  I am often asked about what type of firearm is best for personal protection, what type of ammunition should be used, should the firearm be kept loaded, how to secure it from children and/or theft, how to deal with the “bump in the night”, how to search with a firearm, should an intruder be confronted or should the resident bunker in place, etc.  These are all great questions and it takes careful planning depending upon your skill level, personality, comfort level, and the layout of your residence or business.

This class takes place in two phases.  Phase one includes a thorough interview of your needs, along with a comprehensive survey of your residential and/or business location.  Phase two includes a summary of findings, along with a comprehensive debriefing that will be fun, informative, and extremely beneficial for the entire family.

You do not need any special equipment for this class, just time to talk and train at your residence or business.

Duration: Minimum of 4 hours

Cost: $249.00

Class Size: Unlimited (individual or the entire family)

Although no equipment is necessary, please feel free to communicate your anticipated needs and we would be happy to assist you with equipment selection and/or purchase.

Tactical Medic

As the criminal element evolves, so have the tactics and training techniques utilized by many special response and S.W.A.T. teams throughout the world.  I believe that one of the greatest trends and additions to these teams is the utilization of on-scene clinical staff.  What better feeling can any team member have during an operation than to realize that a highly skilled physician, nurse, or paramedic is assigned to your team and can render aid immediately, if needed?

Traditionally, in the civilian world, clinicians have toted medical trauma kits and haven’t had access to firearms.  With the addition of tactical medics to special response teams, many clinicians are now minimally armed with pistols and some have access to long gun platforms as well.  These special souls are an integral part of the operation and need to feel just as comfortable with their weapon systems and tactics as their sworn counterparts.

This class is tailored to each individual weapon system.  It’s vitally important that the tactical medic receive formal, in depth training on his or her pistol, carbine rifle, and/or shotgun.  In essence, this course is like the Comprehensive Pistol, Tactical Shotgun, and Complete Carbine class on steroids. Depending upon which platform is required by the student, we spend one complete day in the classroom going over the desired weapon in addition to covering legal and tactical issues such as use of force, use of deadly force, immediate defense of life, and fleeing felon situations.

We also extensively cover various operational principles and scenario-based training such as officer down drills/officer rescue drills, break contact drills, movement and searching drills, shooting on the move, etc.  This course precisely parallels the “Care Under Fire” portion of Tactical Combat Casualty Care or (TCCC).

Day two starts on the square range at the crack of dawn with a highly energetic, dynamic approach to the lessons learned the previous day.  This is where all classroom and theory turns into practical application. We start with in-depth weapon training, followed by scenario-based training to solidify the knowledge and practical application and increase the confidence level of all students.  This class is an absolute must for all tactical medics.

This curriculum is intended for first responders, specifically EMS members assigned to a special response or S.W.A.T. team.  This class is not available to the general public.

This course requires students to move dynamically while shooting and assume various shooting positions like standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone.

Class costs would be adjusted to the increased training needs of the student.

Soft Target Resolution (STR)

It doesn’t matter where you live, work, or play in this world.  The unfortunate reality is that terrorist activities are increasing on a global level and soft targets are the choice among these cowardly thugs.  A soft target is defined as a “person or thing that is relatively unprotected or vulnerable, especially to military or terrorist attack.”  Whether you’re at home, work, or on vacation anywhere on this planet, you are at risk of becoming a victim of a soft target attack.  A bombing at a Pop concert in Manchester, England or a school shooting here in the U.S. has the same intended consequences; the suspect or suspects want to instill fear and inflict pain and death on a massive scale.  It doesn’t take too much to realize that this new-found risk is dangerously rising.  Within the United States these attacks are becoming a normal report on the nightly news.  We can’t let this happen any longer.

I believe my job on this earth is to help you and your loved ones stay safe throughout your journey in life.  Putting politics and psychology aside, defending this nation and teaching others to defend themselves is one of my proud responsibilities as an American.  Sure, I have my own ideas on how we got here and what it’s going to take to get our world to a better place but theorizing and hypothesizing is something I do best around a fire pit, after supper, with something to sip on.  Life is short and bad things happen to really good people.  The time to act is now.  If you remain in a state of readiness, you never have to worry about “getting” ready.

Depending upon individual routines, most Americans become a soft target on a daily basis without even being consciously aware of it.  If you frequent schools, hospitals, churches, restaurants, sporting events, entertainment venues, shopping malls, etc. you naturally and most definitely place yourself in an environment where you could become a witness at the very least, if not a victim of a soft target attack.

I created Soft Target Resolution (STR) as an in-depth, multiphase approach to combat the growing enigma of mass homicide that is becoming a cancer in our society.  This course is a down-to-business, PC free zone that is tailored to meet the defensive needs of any individual or group anywhere you live, work, or play.  Through our professional and personal style of instruction, we will give you the information and tools you need to act immediately and appropriately during a violent encounter.  Whether you’re a small family business or massive corporation makes no difference.  This training will no doubt become a true bonding experience for all involved as you increase awareness and confidence while boosting your ability to act and ultimately win. Church pastors, doctors, school teachers, CEOs, chefs, and bankers are just a few examples of the many professionals that would benefit from this training.

We tailor this course to the specific needs of our clients.  Some of the training elements include, but are not limited to:

  • Current Threat Assessment
  • Building and Perimeter Security
  • Pre-Event Briefing
  • Hostile Intruder/Active Shooter Training (Psychological Patterns of Behavior Based Upon Profiling)
  • Run, Hide, or Fight?
  • Altercation and Physical Apprehension vs. Lethal Encounter
  • Tactical Communication
  • Perimeter Containment

  • Post Incident Communication and Debrief
  • Force-On-Force Training

Law Enforcement Tactics and Training

When I began my police career back in 1994, all of my academy instructors made me believe their curriculum and area of instruction was the most important aspect of my law enforcement training.  While I appreciated every area of training and each instructor’s passion for their domain, it took me no time at all to realize that the understanding and application of the use of force policy, specifically deadly force was by far the most precious to my well being.  Most mistakes in law enforcement can be fixed, either by writing a memorandum to a superior, erasing what was written on paper, or using a backspace key on a computer.  While working in some of the heaviest crime saturated areas of Los Angeles, I knew my thorough understanding of when and how to use deadly force, and skill with my weapon systems would protect my physical safety and enable me to live and enjoy the many gifts this life has to offer.

I already had an excellent base with my marksmanship skills but I soon learned to use that foundation to springboard to a whole new level.  I became friends with a Los Angeles Police S.W.A.T. Officer and I loved talking tactics with him.  The beauty of tactics is that there’s more than one way to effectively solve a problem and it’s like working a puzzle.  Anybody can stand in one position and shoot at a static target but moving through a house while searching for potentially armed suspects or shooting on the move takes firearms training to an advanced level.

I routinely work as an independent contractor and enjoy assisting various law enforcement agencies with training needs.  Whether it’s a custom order firearms class on a square range, a Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) class, or working with officers with inert training aids during entry and searching training, I will provide unique training opportunities for the individual or an entire department.
